Time

Reading analogue clocks

An analogue clock has two hands. Together they let us tell the time — even to the minute.

12369minute handlong → points to 3hour handshort → just past 3quarter past 3

The two hands

• The short hand is the hour hand — it shows the hour. • The long hand is the minute hand — it shows the minutes. When the hour hand points exactly to a number and the minute hand is on 12, it is an o'clock time.

Minutes on the clock

The numbers on the clock face are 5 minutes apart. So the minute hand on 3 means 15 minutes past, and on 6 means 30 minutes past.

O'clock, quarter past and half past

• Minute hand on 12 → o'clock. • Minute hand on 3 → quarter past (15 minutes past). • Minute hand on 6 → half past (30 minutes past).
