Timetables tell you when things happen. They help you plan a journey, catch a bus or train, or know which lesson comes next.

What a timetable shows

A timetable is a table of times. It can tell you: ā€¢ when a bus, train or plane leaves and arrives ā€¢ what lessons you have at school and when they start and finish.

Reading start and finish times

Find the row or box for the thing you want. It shows the start time and the finish time. For example, if Art is 11 to 11.30 a.m., then Art starts at 11 a.m. and finishes at 11.30 a.m.

Reading columns and rows

In a bus or train timetable, each column is a different bus or train, and each row is a stop. To find when Bus 2 reaches a stop, look down the Bus 2 column to that stop's row. A dash (ā€“) means the bus or train does not stop there.

Working out how long

To find how long something lasts, look at its start time and finish time. Maths from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. lasts 1 hour. Music from 12 to 12.30 p.m. lasts 30 minutes.

Worked examples

Finding a start time

  1. The question asks when Art starts.
  2. Find Art in the timetable: 11 to 11.30 a.m.
  3. The first time is the start time.

Answer: Art starts at 11 a.m.

Finding a finish time

  1. The question asks when Music ends.
  2. Find Music in the timetable: 12 to 12.30 p.m.
  3. The second time is the finish time.

Answer: Music ends at 12.30 p.m.

How long is the lesson

  1. Maths starts at 9 a.m. and finishes at 10 a.m.
  2. Count on from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.
  3. That is 1 hour.

Answer: Maths lasts 1 hour.

Reading a bus column

  1. Look at the Bus 2 column.
  2. Go down to the Altash Way row.
  3. Read the time in that box.

Answer: Bus 2 arrives at Altash Way at 8:50.
